How We Explore Cruise Ports on Our Own

Hi Reader,

One of our favorite parts of cruising is stepping ashore and exploring somewhere new. We often plan our own port days instead of booking through the cruise line. It gives us more choice over what we see and how we spend our time.

That doesn’t mean we head out without a plan. A little research helps us find experiences we’ll enjoy and get back to the ship on time.

How We Find Shore Excursions

We often look for tours through Viator, Klook, GetYourGuide, and Shore Excursions Group.

When searching, we look for tours that specifically mention shore excursions, cruise port tours, or pickup arranged around cruise ship schedules. That helps us find options designed with cruise passengers in mind.

We also decide whether we want a private tour or a shared group tour. A private tour includes only your group and often gives you more flexibility. You may be able to adjust the pace or customize the stops around what interests you most. Larger group tours can be a good fit if you’re happy to follow a set itinerary and want to keep costs down.

We also check ratings and read reviews from other travelers. Their comments can give us a better sense of what the tour includes, how the guide communicates, and whether the timing worked well.

Recommendations from other cruisers can help, too. Cruise groups and fellow passengers may share useful ideas about local guides, transportation, and places worth visiting.

Leave Time to Get Back to the Ship

When you book a tour on your own, you’re responsible for getting back to the ship before it leaves. If the tour runs late and you miss the ship, you may have to arrange and pay for your own travel to the next port.

Cruise-line excursions usually include a return-to-ship policy. The exact protection varies by cruise line, but it may mean the ship waits for delayed tour groups or helps guests reach the next port. Check your cruise line’s policy before booking.

When we explore independently, we check how far the tour goes from the port and how long it takes to return. We aim to be back at least an hour before departure, leaving extra time for traffic, delays, or a change of plans.

A Little Planning Goes a Long Way

Exploring a port on your own can be a fun way to make a day feel personal. Choose an experience that fits your interests, read recent reviews, and build in enough time to return to the ship comfortably.

Do you usually book a cruise-line excursion or explore independently?

Until next time,

Hi Reader, Some hotels make a trip easier. Others make us want to return. We’ve stayed at each of these hotels more than once, and they’ve earned a place on our repeat-visit list for their location, comfort, service or the memories we’ve made there. Here are five hotels we’ve happily returned to. Park Hyatt Doha The Park Hyatt Doha made a lasting impression with its thoughtful service, comfortable suite, and convenient location in Msheireb Downtown. We were greeted by name, enjoyed a...

Hi Reader, One of our favorite activities is going whale watching whenever it’s available. Over the last 18 months, we’ve taken tours in Maui, Alaska, Dominica, and San Diego. We’ve been fortunate to see whales on every trip, and each outing has given us a different view of these remarkable animals. The destination and season shape what you might see. Maui is known for humpback whales during the winter months, while Alaska’s summer waters attract humpbacks and other species. Dominica is known...

Hi Reader, One of my favorite parts of a big vacation is finding a way to explore somewhere new along the way. On our trip to Kazakhstan, we spent two days in Frankfurt before continuing to Almaty. On the way home, we spent two days in Doha. Both stopovers gave us time to see a new country and break up a long journey. Frankfurt also gave us a chance to adjust to the time difference before heading east. In Doha, we had another welcome opportunity to explore before flying home. Two Days in...
