When we planned our first trip to Kazakhstan, we expected beautiful mountains, interesting history, and a different travel experience.

What we didn’t expect was one of our favorite surprises of the entire trip.

Our Unexpected Favorite in Almaty

Almaty Zoo wasn’t high on our original list. In fact, we hadn’t seen it mentioned often while researching things to do.

But we decided to visit, and we’re so glad we did.

The zoo was clean, well-maintained, and home to a large variety of interesting animals. We enjoyed walking through the grounds and seeing how much the zoo had to offer.

It became one of our top three experiences in Kazakhstan.

That’s one of the best things about travel. Sometimes the places you almost overlook become the memories you talk about most.

Our Kazakhstan Travel Tip

Leave room in your itinerary for an unexpected discovery.

It’s easy to fill every hour with famous attractions and highly rated tours. Those experiences can be wonderful, but some of your favorite moments may come from places you didn’t plan to visit.

Ask your hotel staff for suggestions, watch for local recommendations, and don’t dismiss an attraction simply because it isn’t featured in every guidebook.

Our visit to Almaty Zoo reminded us that travel surprises can be just as meaningful as the experiences you carefully plan.

A Product That Helps Us Travel With Carry-Ons

We try to avoid checking luggage whenever possible. Traveling with carry-ons and backpacks makes moving between airports, hotels, and destinations much easier.
