Sports, Concerts & Stadium Fun: What to Know Before You Go

Hi Reader,

Stadium events aren’t just about the show—they’re an experience. The energy of the crowd, the traditions, and the memories made are part of what makes travel special. Recently, we’ve been lucky enough to attend two very different, but equally unforgettable games.

If you’re planning to attend a stadium event while traveling—whether a game or a concert—here’s what I learned and what I recommend.

First up was a preseason NFL matchup—Commanders vs. Bengals. It may not have been the Super Bowl, but preseason games have their own charm: cheaper tickets, more relaxed crowds, and a chance to see rookies fighting for a roster spot. It’s a fun way to enjoy professional football without the high price tag.

A week later, we were at the Ohio State vs Texas NCAA game, and it was an electric atmosphere. College football has a completely different vibe—bands, traditions, and the passion of the student section. What made this game even more historic was Lee Corso’s retirement from ESPN’s College GameDay. Seeing that moment live was truly special.

Tips for Attending Stadium Events While Traveling

  1. Check the stadium policy on what you can bring inside. Some venues allow only clear bags and water bottles, while others (like Ohio State) restrict bags almost entirely—you’re limited to something as small as 8x5x1 inches. Always double-check before you go.
  2. Arrive early. From marching bands at college games to player warm-ups in the NFL—and sound checks or openers at concerts—some of the best moments happen before showtime.
  3. Soak up the traditions. Whether it’s the Ohio State marching band’s Script Ohio, an NFL hype tunnel, or a concert’s encore ritual, these details make live events so memorable.

My Recommendations

If you’re heading to a stadium soon, here are a few must-haves that make the experience so much easier:

  • Clear Water Bottle – Some stadiums only allow clear water bottles, and this one on Amazon meets most venue requirements. We used ours at the Ohio State game, and it worked perfectly with their strict rules.
  • Clear Backpack – Keeps you hands-free while making security checks a breeze. We’ve taken this clear backpack to several games, including the Commanders' preseason game and the Rose Bowl, and it’s been a lifesaver every time.
  • Stadium Seat – A lifesaver for those long games on hard bleachers. This is the same one we used at the Rose Bowl last year, and it made a huge difference in comfort during the game.

Gear Tip: Clear Bags Make Security Simple

Many stadiums have strict bag policies—and some don’t allow bags at all. At Ohio State, for example, the only option was a tiny 8x5x1 bag. That’s why it’s so important to check the individual stadium’s policy before heading out. If clear bags are permitted, a clear backpack keeps your essentials organized and makes security checks hassle-free. We’ve tested ours at several games, including the Commanders' preseason game and the Rose Bowl, and it’s worked perfectly every time.

We Don’t Always Travel on Points—But We Always Collect Them Over the years, we’ve learned this simple truth: even if you don’t plan your whole trip using points, you should always be collecting them.
