What We Loved Most About Our Alaska Cruise

Alaska is a bucket-list cruise destination—and it did not disappoint when I visited with my Mom last month! From stunning glaciers to charming port towns and unforgettable wildlife, this trip was packed with adventure. Here are our Alaska Cruise Must-Do’s, including the excursions we loved and a mini packing list so you’re ready for your own Alaska adventure.

Our Favorite Excursions

Juneau – Glacier & Whale Watching
We booked a shore excursion through our cruise line that included whale watching and a visit to Mendenhall Glacier. While we didn’t see bubble net feeding (the rare coordinated whale feeding), we did see humpback whales, eagles and sea lions.

Skagway – White Pass & Yukon Route Railway
This scenic railroad ride takes you through gorgeous mountain landscapes, waterfalls, and historic mining areas. It’s one of the most popular excursions for a reason—easy, relaxing, and beautiful.

Ketchikan – City Highlighst, Wildlife and More Tour
We booked the OVER THE TOP TOURS – City Highlights, Wildlife and More! via Viator, and it was excellent. We explored local wildlife areas and learned the cultural significance of totem poles. Ketchikan’s lush rainforest scenery makes it one of my favorite Alaska stops.

Victoria, BC – Evening in the Inner Harbour
With limited time in port, we took the shuttle into town, walked the beautiful Inner Harbour, browsed shops, and enjoyed the lit-up historic buildings—it was the perfect relaxing evening.

Seattle – Post-Cruise City Highlights Tour
After the cruise, we took the Seattle Post-Cruise Tour on Viator. It was a stress-free way to be picked up from the ship and see the city’s highlights before heading home.

Mini Packing List

Alaska’s weather varies—sometimes dramatically—since much of it is a rainforest climate. Layers are key.

  • Waterproof, packable raincoat – I used this one and loved how small it packed down.
  • Comfortable walking shoes – For uneven terrain in ports.
  • Lightweight backpack – For water, snacks, and extra layers.
  • Binoculars – Perfect for whale watching and spotting eagles.
  • Gloves and hat – Even in summer, mornings on deck can be chilly.
  • Camera or phone with zoom – You’ll want those glacier and wildlife shots.

Gear Tip

One item I’m glad I packed was a collapsible water bottle. It saved space in my bag and made staying hydrated during excursions so much easier.

Travel Tip

Book a balcony room if you can. Watching whales and glaciers float by while hanging out on your own balcony is unforgettable.
