Planning Your Next Trip? Here’s What I Always Do First

Hi Reader,

Planning a trip can feel overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be. Over the years, I’ve developed a simple, stress-free system that helps me go from “Where should we go?” to “Let’s book it” without the chaos.

Here are my go-to tips and tricks that save time, money, and frustration when planning any trip:

  1. Start with the experience, not the destination - Instead of asking where to go, ask what you want to do. Do you want beaches or mountains? City lights or quiet nature? Adventure or food? Let that shape your destination search.
  2. Use Google Flights to spot deals - Even if you’re not ready to book, use Google Flights or Kayak to track fares. Set alerts for your preferred dates and watch how prices move. You might end up with a surprise deal you didn’t expect.
  3. Look at cruise ports, not just cruise lines - If you’re thinking about cruising, start by exploring the ports and itineraries rather than the cruise line. This helps you find unique destinations you may not have considered and prioritize the experience.
  4. Book flights or lodging with free cancellation first (whichever may be the most challenging) - Secure a refundable flight, hotel, or vacation rental early to lock in a rate. Then, keep checking—if prices drop, you can cancel and rebook. You can do this for rental cars and tours as well.
  5. Keep your travel info organized - Use a trip-planning app (like TripIt or Wanderlog) or even a shared Google Doc to keep all your confirmations, notes, and ideas in one place, especially if you’re traveling with others.

💡 Travel Tip: Don’t overplan. Leave space in your itinerary for spontaneous moments—those are often the most memorable.

🌍 My Recommendation: If you’re planning anything international, check your passport today. Make sure it has at least 6 months' validity from your return date. Renewing it last-minute can cause major delays.
